UV Radiation Health Risks — What Too Much Sun Does to Your Body
Ultraviolet radiation is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the World Health Organization — the same category as tobacco and asbestos. Yet most people never check the UV index before spending time outdoors. Here's what UV radiation actually does to your body, and why a 3-second UV check can protect your long-term health.
Skin Cancer — The #1 Risk
UV radiation is the primary cause of skin cancer, responsible for approximately 90% of non-melanoma skin cancers and a significant proportion of melanomas. There are three main types:
Melanoma
The deadliest form of skin cancer. Melanoma develops in the cells that produce melanin (the pigment that gives skin its color). While it accounts for only about 1% of skin cancers, it causes the majority of skin cancer deaths. The link to UV is well-established — experiencing five or more severe sunburns before age 20 significantly increases lifetime melanoma risk. Early detection is critical: when caught early, the 5-year survival rate exceeds 99%.
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)
The most common form of cancer worldwide. BCC develops in the basal cells of the epidermis and is directly linked to cumulative UV exposure. It rarely spreads to other parts of the body but can cause significant local tissue damage if left untreated. BCC most commonly appears on sun-exposed areas: face, neck, ears, scalp, and shoulders.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)
The second most common skin cancer. SCC develops in the squamous cells of the skin's outer layer and is strongly associated with cumulative UV exposure. Unlike BCC, SCC can metastasize if not treated, making early detection important. Risk increases with chronic sun exposure over decades.
Approximately 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by age 70. The vast majority of these cases are linked to UV exposure — making it one of the most preventable cancers.
Photoaging — Premature Skin Aging
Approximately 90% of visible skin aging is caused by UV exposure — not genetics, not the natural aging process. This is called photoaging, and it's the result of UV-A radiation penetrating deep into the dermis and breaking down collagen and elastin fibers over time.
Signs of photoaging include:
- Deep wrinkles and fine lines appearing earlier than expected
- Dark spots and uneven pigmentation (solar lentigines)
- Loss of skin elasticity and firmness
- Rough, leathery skin texture
- Visible blood vessels (telangiectasia)
- Thin, fragile skin that bruises easily
Photoaging is cumulative and largely irreversible. It begins in childhood with every unprotected UV exposure, but the visible effects typically appear decades later. Daily sunscreen use has been shown to reduce photoaging significantly even when started in middle age.
Eye Damage
UV radiation doesn't only affect skin — your eyes are equally vulnerable. The cornea and lens absorb UV radiation, and cumulative exposure leads to several serious conditions:
Cataracts
The leading cause of blindness worldwide. UV-B radiation damages proteins in the lens, causing them to cloud over time. The WHO estimates that up to 20% of cataracts may be caused or enhanced by sun exposure. UV-blocking sunglasses (UV400 rated) significantly reduce this risk.
Pterygium
Often called "surfer's eye" — a growth of tissue on the white of the eye that can extend over the cornea and impair vision. Strongly associated with UV exposure, wind, and dust. Common in people who spend significant time outdoors near water or sand.
Macular Degeneration
Extended UV exposure is a risk factor for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of vision loss in adults over 50. UV damage to the retina accumulates over a lifetime.
Photokeratitis
Essentially a sunburn of the cornea. It causes intense pain, tearing, and temporary vision loss. Snow blindness is a form of photokeratitis caused by UV reflection off snow at high altitude — which is why UV protection is critical for skiers and mountaineers.
Immune Suppression
UV radiation suppresses the immune system locally in the skin and, at high doses, systemically. This is one reason why sunburn blisters are prone to infection, and why UV exposure can reactivate herpes simplex virus (cold sores) in susceptible individuals. Chronic UV-induced immune suppression may also reduce the body's ability to detect and destroy early cancer cells in the skin.
Who Is Most at Risk?
While UV radiation affects everyone, certain groups face elevated risk:
- Fair-skinned individuals (Fitzpatrick Types I-II) — burn quickly and have less natural melanin protection
- People with many moles — more potential sites for melanoma development
- Family history of skin cancer — genetic susceptibility amplifies UV risk
- Outdoor workers — cumulative daily exposure over years significantly increases SCC and BCC risk
- People at high altitude — UV increases roughly 10% per 1,000 feet of elevation
- Those taking photosensitizing medications — certain antibiotics, diuretics, retinoids, and antidepressants dramatically increase UV sensitivity
- Children and adolescents — severe sunburns before age 20 have an outsized impact on lifetime cancer risk
UV Index Thresholds and Health Risk

How to Protect Yourself
The goal isn't to avoid the sun entirely — moderate sun exposure is important for vitamin D production and mental health. The goal is to know the UV level and protect accordingly:
- Check the UV index before going outside — not just the temperature or cloud cover
- Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ to all exposed skin 15 minutes before going out
- Reapply every 2 hours and immediately after swimming or sweating
- Wear UV400 sunglasses to protect your eyes from cataracts and retinal damage
- Seek shade during peak hours (typically 10am–4pm) when UV is highest
- Wear UPF-rated clothing for reliable, reapplication-free protection
- Be extra cautious near water, sand, and snow — reflected UV adds to direct exposure
