The math behind the SPF number

That last column is why you tan anyway: on a UV-8 afternoon, 2–3% of a very large number is still a meaningful dose. Your skin responds to the UV that gets through by producing melanin — the tan — just over hours instead of minutes.
Why real life tans faster than the table says
SPF is measured at 2 mg of product per cm² of skin — roughly a full shot glass for an adult body. Studies consistently find people apply 25–50% of that, which cuts effective protection disproportionately: half the dose of SPF 30 behaves closer to SPF 5–8 than to 15. Add missed spots, sweat, towels and skipped reapplication, and there is plenty of UV left to tan — or burn.
A slower tan is the entire point
Tanning is your skin’s damage response, and the same UV that browns also burns and ages. Sunscreen stretches the timeline so melanin can build before the burn threshold. Frequently asked questions
Does SPF 50 stop you tanning?
No. SPF 50 blocks about 98% of UVB at the full tested dose; the remaining 2% still stimulates melanin over a session, especially at a high UV index. You tan more slowly — that is the protection working.
Can you tan with SPF 30 on?
Yes. SPF 30 at real-world application rates lets through enough UV to tan gradually. Reapply every two hours anyway: the goal is tanning without crossing into burning.
Why did I burn even with sunscreen on?
Almost always under-application, missed spots, or no reapplication after swimming or sweating — half the tested dose gives far less than half the protection. A high UV index shortens every window.
Does sunscreen block vitamin D?
In theory it reduces production; in practice, studies show regular sunscreen users maintain vitamin D levels — because nobody applies perfectly and incidental UV exposure continues.
